Yesterday followingnoon, the Corsi and another patrol boat rescued 450 migrants 100 miles east of Syracuse. Meanwhile, the centers where the immigrants stay are facing difficult management of the reception system, put under pressure due to the boom in arrivals.
Minister Matteo Piantedosi invited all the prefects to work with the districts and municipalities for the urgent activation of new centers dedicated to unaccompanied minors, in the last 3 years regarding 56 thousand have arrived.
More than 20,000 migrants have landed on Italy’s shores so far this year, compared with around 6,000 over the same period in 2022 and 2021.
Tragedies in Calabria have not been few, with the most recent one occurring in the last days of February. Where a boat overturned, which caused dozens of victims. The overload of the vessel and the rough sea caused problems, leading to its drowning.
The police force reported that there were up to 250 migrants on board, many of them from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
