Did you know ?
A unique, Made in France sound technology is hidden behind the monumental work revealed by the President of the Republic, Wednesday November 11 at Pantheon, in Paris. On November 11, on the occasion of the armistice celebrations, the writer Maurice Genevoixauthor in particular of “ 14″ onesenters the Pantheon.
As part of this event, the Head of State commissioned a work from two major figures of contemporary creation, the German visual artist Anselm Kiefer and the French composer Pascal Dusapin. This is the first public commission for the Pantheon since 1923.
But what technologies are hidden behind this immersive work, created by Pascal Dusapin?
In Nomine Lucis (In the Name of Light) is a piece for singing voices, recorded by the choir Stress to the Paris Philharmonic.
With the aim of bringing the anonymous people of the Great War into the Pantheon, nearly 15,000 representative names of soldiers who died for France were also read and recorded by the actors. Florence Darel et Xavier Gallais.
« I wanted to make the stones of the Pantheon sing, to create an immense ‘vocal lung’ where everyone can hear different echoes of their past and their history, » evokes Pascal Dusapin.
A tailor-made and unique sound system was developed and installed within the Pantheon itself. A total of 70 acoustic speakers, designed and manufactured by Amadeus, were arranged around the transepts and at the level of the dome, more than 35 meters high. Clad in natural stone, they were made invisible, becoming an integral part of the monument.
This broadcasting device is controlled by a sound spatialization system, called HOLOPHONIX.
« The HOLOPHONIX processor promotes the sound spatialization of the different choirs through its different on-board algorithms, in two or three dimensions, » recalls Thierry Coduys, Director of Technologies associated with the project and collaborator of Pascal Dusapin for many years.
« The spatial programming, namely the position of the choirs, their trajectory, as well as the other events which make up this ‘electroacoustic score’ is notably managed within the IanniX graphic sequencer. The HOLOPHONIX processor receives, interprets and translates these millions of temporal and spatial messages, to make them perceptive, » continues Thierry Coduys.
Adopted by several performance halls, including some of the most demanding and prestigious, including La Comédie Française, the Théâtre National de Chaillot, or La Scala (Paris), HOLOPHONIX is an immersive sound spatialization system.
Developed by the company Amadeus, in collaboration with the laboratory STMS (Sciences and Technologies of Music and Sound) which combines theIRCAMthe CNRS, Sorbonne University and the Ministry of Culturethis processor includes different technological bricks from IRCAM.
