One person was killed and several others injured when a bridge collapsed due to heavy rains in Saudi Arabia’s southwestern province of Jizan on Saturday, state media reported.

Al-Ekhbariya channel announced that “a partial collapse of the bridge connecting the governorates of Abu Arish and Sabiya in Jizan, 1,100 kilometers southwest of Riyadh, resulted in deaths and many injuries.”

Government channels reported video footage shot from the air showing part of the bridge collapsing, approaching one of two cars at the scene. Rapid water also appeared from all directions around the bridge base.

The channel explained that the National Transportation Safety Center has begun “necessary investigations” into the circumstances of the partial bridge collapse.

On Saturday, Saudi Arabia’s National Meteorological Center warned that continued severe thunderstorms would cause heavy rains in Jazan province.

Compared with summer temperatures in Riyadh and other cities, which can reach 50 degrees Celsius, southern Saudi Arabia experiences cold weather and constant rainfall.

This is because the area suffers from high-humidity monsoons in the summer, filled with cumulus clouds and heavy rains.

Road and bridge collapses are uncommon in Saudi Arabia, which has an excellent road network connecting various regions in the vast Arabian desert.
