BOLZANO. The prosecution of the Court of Auditors asks the former president of the Province of Bolzano Luis Durnwalder compensation for damages of 300 thousand euros for alleged damage to image once morest the local authority. The damage would derive from the penal sentence, which has become final, of the former South Tyrolean president a 2 years and 6 months for embezzlementin the process on the undue use of confidential funds.
The hearing was held before the judges of the Court of Auditors of Bolzano, who will now have to decide whether or not to accept the compensation request, made by the prosecutor Alessia Di Gregorio. In the courtroom, the defense attorney Gerhard Brandstatter instead he asked that no compensation be paid: «Apart from the legal formalisms, from which it might be interpreted that the President’s criminal conviction might result in damage to the Province’s image, in reality all the conditions are missing: during his presidency, Durnwalder has indeed increased prestige of the Province of Bolzano”.
According to Brandstätter, “following the criminal conviction there was no image damage, but rather a great demonstration of solidarity by the population towards the president”.
«Finally – concludes the lawyer – I remember that the conviction took place only for one purely formal lookas the compensation of the reserved funds was disputed, while we maintain that in reality they were gods refunds. In any case Durnwalder did not pocket a euro from the reserved funds».
