Real Madrid’s former Spanish legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas has revealed that he is gay. The revelation came through a tweet posted on Sunday followingnoon. “I hope you respect me, I’m gay,” the former Spain captain revealed in a tweet. After the revelation, former Spain teammate Carles Puyol came forward to support the 41-year-old.

Casillas ended his marriage to sports journalist Sara Carbonero in March 2021. The separation was following five years of marriage. They have two boys.

Casillas has played 510 matches for Real Madrid. He has been involved in many titles such as three Champions League, five La Liga, four Super Copa and two Copa del Rey. Between 2000 and 2016, Spain won 167 matches. He won the 2010 World Cup and the 2000 Euro Cup for his country. Casillas is considered one of the best goalkeepers in football history. He retired in 2020 following suffering a heart attack while training at Portuguese club Porto, who last wore the jersey.
