South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol has been criticized in political circles for not mentioning Japan and its past history in his Liberation Day celebration speech.

The opposition party called this a “shameful message”, and there were also voices within the ruling party that “an anti-Japanese message should be conveyed.”

President Yoon Seok-yeol’s Liberation Day message only mentioned “Japan” three times in 1,400 words, thereby erasing Japan.

The Democratic Party of Korea complained, “We raise our heads in shame at the congratulatory message of the President of the Republic of Korea, which was praised by the Japanese media.”

“Only Japan and the self-proclaimed far-right traitorous forces welcomed President Yun Suk-yeol’s Liberation Day celebrations, which is betraying long history.”

On the other hand, the People’s Power Party highly praised the congratulatory message for “declaring a new unified discourse and clarifying the significance of Liberation Day.”

However, party leaders and senior officials also noted that “unfortunately, there was no mention of Japan or past history.”

“On Liberation Day, we can’t help but mention Japan, right? Although we adopt a conciliatory stance, shouldn’t the historical part be pointed out?”

Kim Hyung-seok, the director of the Korean Independence Memorial Hall who initiated the so-called “semi-celebration ceremony”, made it clear that he would retain his position, saying that even resigning would only cause controversy.

“Expelling the ‘New Right’ who deny the history of the Republic of Korea”, “This is nothing more than outdated anti-Japanese propaganda.”

After Liberation Day, the war of words between the government and the opposition continued.

Even within the ruling party, from the primaries to the election, there were voices expressing concern about prolonging the conflict, saying that exit strategies such as Chairman Kim’s voluntary resignation or the president’s withdrawal of the nomination were necessary, but the People’s Power Party drew a line saying: “This is not the mainstream opinion within the party.”
