“I’m an adult against a six-year-old child” – 2024-04-30 17:39:43

The American president Joe Biden called his opponent in November’s presidential election, the former president, a “six-year-old child.” Donald Trumpin his speech at the annual Correspondents’ Association dinner, while pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the building.

Many famous guests, journalists and celebrities, arrived at the Hilton hotel in Washington, as about 100 protesters gathered near its entrance, with some chanting “shame on you”.

Inside the building, no mention was made of the war between Israel and Hamas, with the emphasis being – as tradition would have it – on scathing comments against the American president, which this time related to Biden’s age and his downfalls on the stairs of the presidential aircraft.

This year the event was presented by comedian Colin Jost, writer and actor of the well-known TV show Saturday Night Live.

“I’d like to point out that it’s after 10:00 pm and sleeping Joe is still up, while Donald Trump has spent the week falling asleep in court every morning,” the comedian commented, a reference to the trial taking place in New York with the Republican ex-president accused.

When Biden took the floor, he said that in this year’s presidential election, “age matters. I am an adult who has a six-year-old child as his opponent.”

Pro-Palestinian demonstration

Outside the hall, a demonstration took place in front of the hotel, with protesters hanging a meter-long Palestinian flag from its top floor. Others had gathered on the ground floor holding banners or loudspeakers.

The Correspondents’ Association’s annual dinner comes as a movement of solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip expands to American universities.

One of the groups that organized the protest in front of the Hilton, Code Pink, said it wanted to “stop” the dinner to protest “the Biden administration’s complicity in the targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli military.” She had also emphasized that her action “will not be violent”.

For months now, almost every speech by the US president has been attended by protesters protesting US support for Israel and calling for an end to the war in Gaza.

Palestinian journalists had also asked their American colleagues in an open letter to boycott the Correspondents’ Association dinner.

“You have a special responsibility to speak truth to power and uphold journalistic ethics. It is unacceptable to remain silent, fearing for your career, while journalists in Gaza are still being detained, tortured and killed for doing their job,” about twenty Palestinian journalists stressed in the letter.

According to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 97 journalists have been killed since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, including 92 Palestinians. At least 16 others have been injured.
