Fabienne Ernie joined as a singer in 2017 THE ELUVIANS but also plays the Celtic harp and mandolin. Apparently the Swiss is not working to capacity and founded the symphonic metal group with Jonas Wolf, who had joined the folk metallers as a guitarist a year earlier ILLUMISHADE. With “Another Side Of You”, the two and their team are now presenting their second album and they obviously want to WITHIN TEMPTATION, EPIC, DELAIN and Co. declare war.
So the direction of travel is clear. Symphonic metal that also brings with it rock trademarks, some folk, dark keyboards and angelic vocals in the foreground. Fabienne is extremely versatile and creative with her vocal lines, while Jonas delivers crisp, sometimes complex and playful riffs. The whole thing is framed with synths, dark, sometimes cool keys and orchestral elements, typical of the genre.
How does ILLUMISHADE stand out from the reference bands in the genre? Not much! But that doesn’t matter, because the material on offer is recorded and produced in a highly professional manner and, despite the flood of genres, manages to remain exciting with lots of details and enough variety and never seems like a copy of the bands mentioned. With a bit of Disney appeal in some songs and the somewhat cheesy “Verliebt”, which is performed in Schwyzerdütsch, there is no fear of pathos.
From opulent symphonic pieces, to many headbang hits and catchy hymns with the potential to be a hit, to delicate ballads, everything is there and has numerous tricks and details, so that “Another Side Of You” seems wonderfully fresh and informal. The Swiss therefore effortlessly present themselves as a new and talented hope in the fight for the genre throne.
