Illinois over 1,500 COVID-19 hospitalizations for first time since August – Shaw Local

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Friday announced 3,300 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and seven additional deaths.

The CDC reported that 63 counties in Illinois are at a high community level for COVID-19, up from 46 counties at a high level the previous week, with 12 counties at a high community level and 51 counties at a medium level. IDPH reports 20,495 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Illinois since Nov. 25 and 57 deaths.

As of Thursday evening, Illinois had 1,509 COVID-19 patients in hospital, the most since Aug. 15. Of these, 161 were in intensive care units and 51 on ventilators.

“As we enter December and the weather continues to cool, Illinois is beginning to see an expected increase in COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses such as influenza,” said IDPH Director, Dr. Sameer Vohra, in a press release. “Please continue to take all preventive measures to protect yourself, your family and friends, especially very young children and people over the age of 65 who are most vulnerable to serious consequences. These effective strategies include testing for COVID-19, especially if you are visiting someone at risk for serious illness; improved ventilation; good hand hygiene; staying home when sick; and getting up to date with the COVID-19 bivalent booster and flu vaccine.

For Thursday, the state administered 18,948 vaccines.

Case rate per 100,000: 23.0 (up 2.1 from Thursday)

Percentage of intensive care beds available: 12%

Hospital admissions diagnosed with COVID-19 (seven-day rolling average): 145 (up 7 from Thursday, highest since July 19)

Reported Weekly Deaths: 57 (up 9 from the previous week)

Illinois has recorded 3,885,397 total cases of the virus and 35,494 people have died.

County by County Update: Starting in mid-April, IDPH will provide a county-by-county update focusing on the rate of cases per 100,000 people, the percentage of critical care beds available, a seven-day rolling average of hospital admissions hospital diagnosed with COVID-19 and deaths weekly.

The definition of hospitalization for COVID-19 is as follows: The seven-day average of the daily number of hospital admissions diagnosed with COVID-19, measured using the Illinois Syndromic Surveillance System.

Illinois collects all ER and inpatient visits through syndromic surveillance of all Illinois acute care hospitals in near real time. Data are presented with a three-day lag to allow time for the diagnosis to be reported.
