Illinois announces Spanish-language commercial license exam

The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office announced Monday that a written test in Spanish is now available for residents applying for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

In addition to the exam, the Secretary of State’s office has also translated CDL study guide materials, making them available in Spanish.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said offering the CDL written test in Spanish will increase accessibility and address the shortage of truck and school bus drivers.

It also addresses the shortage of agricultural producers who rely on temporary farm workers.

“School bus drivers play a vital part of the education system, as eligible families and school-aged children rely on reliable yellow bus service to get to school every day,” said Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Pedro Martinez.

“Allowing applicants to take the test in Spanish will help increase access to becoming a school bus driver, alleviating the driver shortage that CPS and other school districts have faced in recent years,” Martinez added in a statement.

Applicants may schedule an appointment online or by calling (217) 785-3013.
