While the news poses a risk of energy shortage this winter, Iliad announces new measures to reduce its consumption and that of its subscribers.
The Iliad Group had already committed to contributing to carbon neutrality by 2035. It is now going further and announcing in a press release that it is implementing new actions.
Further improve the energy efficiency of its networks
Because they represent the bulk of its overall electricity consumption, the Iliad Group indicates that it “makes every effort to optimize the consumption of its networks. On mobile, the Group has decided today to go further in switching off certain frequency bands at night by extending the current system to frequencies of 2100 Mhz in 4G, 2100 in 3G and 3.5 Ghz in 5G. If traffic requires it, cells that have been turned off automatically turn on once more. This effort translates into a drop in the site’s electricity consumption of more than 10% during the period when the cells are switched off, without impacting usage and quality of service.”
With regard to fixed networks, the migration from copper to fiber is essential for Xavier Niel’s Group, a fiber optic line consuming four times less than the copper network. This is the reason why iliad maintains its active policy of deploying and migrating its subscribers to the Fiber network, which enables it to work in parallel on a strong optimization of its equipment on the copper network. If the disconnection and miniaturization of DSLAMs implemented by the Group already makes it possible to make impactful energy savings, iliad calls for an acceleration of the plan to switch off copper in France on all lines eligible for Fiber. of the four operators because it is the only real measure that will lead to major energy savings at the sector level.
Finally, the Group undertakes to erase up to 7.05MW of the instantaneous consumption of its datacenters this winter in the event of energy tension across the country, and this for periods of 1 to 24 consecutive hours each time necessary to participate in the balance of the French electricity network.
Optimize energy consumption related to all buildings/offices and shops
With nearly 10,000 employees in France, making it the second-largest employer in the sector, and more than 180 stores spread across the country, the Group announces that it is now committed to a number of measures to optimize consumption in the all of its office and retail space. A two-degree drop in temperature and measures to optimize lighting and computer equipment have been put in place. The Group is also committed to significantly reducing the time it takes to turn on outdoor lighting, screens and store displays in order to restrict turning it on outside opening hours.
Raising awareness among employees and Freebox subscribers, with tools available to subscribers to reduce their energy consumption
The Group will also support its employees and subscribers in reducing their energy consumption by promoting simple eco-gestures and offering tools for action. For its employees, the Group will offer training on climate issues and sobriety from October. For its subscribers, the Group facilitates access to energy saving tools, in particular the planning of the extinction of the WI-FI via the Freebox Connect application and the highlighting of an Energy saving menu on some Freeboxes.

Membership of the EcoWatt charter
At the same time, the iliad Group adheres to the EcoWatt charter supported by RTE and ADEME. This civic initiative enables French people, businesses and local authorities to adopt responsible energy consumption and thus contribute to ensuring a good supply of electricity for all. The Group thus undertakes to raise awareness among its employees and subscribers of the EcoWatt alert system and to implement additional measures to reduce its consumption during peak energy consumption this winter.
