Ikea is testing an electronic trading platform for used furniture | Business

“In Oslo and Madrid, we are testing a digital second-hand furniture trading platform to help customers connect with each other, buy and sell used Ikea items to each other,” Ikea Retail head of retail Tolga Oncu told AFP, confirming the British a report by the business daily “The Financial Times”.

The shopping platform, called Ikea Preowned, opened for a trial period this summer and will run until December, the company said.

“After December, we will evaluate and decide on the next steps,” T. Oncu said.

The move is the company’s latest initiative to address concerns that its budget furniture business model encourages overconsumption and waste.

It previously unveiled plans to rent, repair and recycle furniture to become a circular business by 2030.

But unlike before, when Ikea bought customers’ used furniture, refurbished it and resold it in its stores, customers can now sell furniture directly to each other on the platform.

According to Ikea, the global second-hand furniture market is growing rapidly and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6.4 percent in 2024.
