The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF is introducing the requirement to wear a neck protector in all of its competitions.
In the future, players will have to wear neck protection at all tournaments – at the Olympic Games as well as at the World Championships. It is not yet clear when the new regulation will come into force. The timing will depend on the availability of the device. Those responsible at the IIHF are reacting to the accidental death of the American Adam Johnson from the Nottingham Panthers with the obligatory action.
The striker, who was also briefly involved in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins, was hit in the neck by an ice skate blade in the British championship game against the Sheffield Steelers at the end of October. The 29-year-old Johnson died shortly afterwards from serious injuries.
In contrast to the German Ice Hockey League, for example, in which wearing protection will be mandatory from the beginning of next year, the leadership of the National League is currently waiving an order that is binding for the professional sector.
