IHA’s Successful First Year in Occupational Medicine

Inomedic Health Applications Inc. Celebrates Successful First year Managing Occupational Medical Services at Hanford Site

Prioritizing Workforce Well-being

IHA’s comprehensive suite of services includes medical monitoring programs, occupational and fitness-for-duty exams,return-to-work case management, behavioral health support, and first aid services. These programs directly support employees from DOE, Hanford prime contractors, including Central Plateau Cleanup Company, Navarro-ATL, Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C), and Hanford Mission Integration Solutions.

In 2024, IHA’s team of 90 professionals managed an impressive 20,606 clinic encounters. This included 7,356 medical exams, 1,318 behavioral health evaluations, and 1,382 wellness sessions.

Preventive care has been a cornerstone of IHA’s approach. The team administered over 1,500 vaccinations, including 824 flu shots provided during on-site clinics. These initiatives aim to minimize disruptions caused by illness and maintain workforce readiness. This proactive approach mirrors strategies implemented by major U.S. employers, such as offering comprehensive wellness programs and on-site vaccinations to reduce sick days and improve productivity, similar to initiatives seen at companies like Google and Apple.

Streamlining Healthcare Through Technology

A major achievement for IHA in its first year was the transition to a fully electronic health record (EHR) system. This move away from a hybrid paper-electronic format has streamlined processes, reduced paperwork, and provided clinicians wiht real-time access to patient information.

The implementation of EHRs mirrors a broader trend in the U.S. healthcare system. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been actively promoting the adoption of EHRs through initiatives like the HITECH Act, which provides financial incentives for healthcare providers to adopt and use certified EHR technology. The expected result is improved care coordination and reduced medical errors.

While the transition wasn’t without its challenges, IHA’s focus on training and optimization should ensure the system delivers long-term efficiencies and enhanced care quality.

Meeting the Unique Needs of the Hanford Workforce

Understanding the specific demands of the Hanford workforce has been a key priority for IHA. Initiatives in the first year included enhancing the sitewide beryllium programme, expanding behavioral health and wellness services, and reducing wait times. These improvements were made possible through close collaboration with site leadership and employee representatives, ensuring services remain relevant and responsive.

For example, the enhanced beryllium program likely involves more frequent and comprehensive screenings for workers who may be exposed to beryllium, a toxic metal. This is crucial because chronic beryllium disease can have severe respiratory health consequences. The expansion of behavioral health services addresses a growing need across the U.S. In 2023, the CDC reported a significant increase in mental health issues, particularly among younger adults. providing accessible behavioral health support is essential for maintaining the overall well-being and productivity of the Hanford workforce.

Looking Ahead: IHA’s Vision for 2025 and Beyond

Building on the foundation laid in 2024, IHA is planning process enhancements aimed at optimizing efficiency and improving the patient experience in 2025. IHA is focused on continued improvements in 2025:

  • Process Optimization: Streamlining workflows to enhance service delivery, ensuring compliance with DOE health and safety requirements.
  • Technology Integration: leveraging data analytics to proactively address workforce health trends. This is in line with the growing use of predictive analytics in healthcare to identify potential health risks and intervene early.
  • Employee Engagement: Expanding outreach to raise awareness of available services and encourage proactive participation in health programs. Similar employee engagement strategies have been successfully implemented by companies across the U.S. to improve employee health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

As the company looks to the future, its mission to enhance employee well-being and support the Hanford cleanup mission remains steadfast. With a successful first year behind them,IHA is poised for continued growth and impactful service delivery in the years ahead.
