Investment banker Igor Mazepa, suspected of taking possession of land near the Kyiv hydroelectric power station, was released from pre-trial detention center on bail on January 23. This happened following the appeal court reduced the amount of his bail from UAH 349 million to UAH 21 million.
About it Forbes was informed by the press service of Concorde Capital. Let us remember that the investigation into the case of Igor Mazepa is carried out by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). On January 18, Mazepa was detained while crossing the Ukrainian-Polish border at 15:00. Searches took place in his company Concorde Capital, where it is believed that the investigation connects these actions with Mazepa’s position regarding pressure on business.
Let us recall that on the same day, Yuri Mazepa, the brother of the owner of the investment company Concord Capital, was detained and was given a preventive measure in the form of detention with bail in the amount of 44 million hryvnia (although the prosecutor asked for bail to be set at 500 million hryvnia, but the defense managed to reduce ten times it – ed.).
January 19 The Pechersky District Court determined a preventive measure for Igor Mazepa in the form of detention with an alternative bail of 349 million UAH. January 23 The Kiev Court of Appeal reduced the amount of bail to UAH 21 million, upholding the decision of the court of first instance.
The Mazepa case: what is known
According to the SBI, Igor Mazepa is the organizer of a scheme for the illegal acquisition of land plots where the hydraulic structures of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Station are located. We are talking regarding a land plot in the Vyshgorod region with an area of more than 7 hectares worth more than 20 million UAH. Refuting the accusations, Mazepa claims that he did not allocate any state plots to anyone.
The investigation was influenced by his positions on putting pressure on entrepreneurs and in the social movement “Manifesto 42”. Mazepa also emphasized that the case once morest him has been going on for 10 years, but has actively developed over the past 1.5 months. Let us recall that business threatened the authorities with an all-Ukrainian strike on February 1.
The Office of the Prosecutor General denied pressure on business and justified the detention of Mazepa by the fact that he might flee abroad. This version was reported by the prosecutor of the Office of the Prosecutor General, Evgeniy Slyota. He explained that according to the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, law enforcement officers have the right to detain a person without a judicial determination if there are suspicions of a possible escape in order to avoid criminal liability.
