Vienna (OTS/IGGÖ) – The Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) is deeply touched by the ongoing developments in the Middle East conflict and understands the emotional connection that many people have to this issue. The conflict has had a tragic impact on civilian populations and the humanitarian situation in the region.
The IGGÖ is firmly committed to the basic principles of freedom of expression and assembly, which are of central importance in a democratic society. Nevertheless, she once once more makes it clear that she firmly rejects any form of calls for violence during demonstrations. Misanthropy, hatred and violence contradict the religious values and ethical principles of the IGGÖ.
“During this difficult time, we appeal to all demonstrators to express their concerns in a peaceful and respectful manner and to uphold human dignity. We are all called upon to seek the calm voice of dialogue and understanding and not to endanger peaceful coexistence in our country,” emphasizes IGGÖ President Ümit Vural.
The IGGÖ also expresses great concern regarding the enormous danger posed by the spread of violent and undifferentiated content on social media. Young people in particular are susceptible to simplified and emotionalizing narratives and need support in critically questioning media content and recognizing extremist content. This requires a joint effort on an educational, family and society-wide basis. In this regard, please also refer to the opinion referred to on the IGGÖ website.
