World number 1 and holder of the trophy, Iga Swiatek joined the American Coco Gauff (WTA 6) in the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros, for a repeat of the 2022 final. The Pole benefited from the retirement following 6 games of Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (66).
Tsurenko gave up following regarding thirty minutes of play, when she was trailing 5-1 by Swiatek. At the previous side switch, she had called the doctor, appearing to be having difficulty breathing and feeling dizzy. Earlier in the day, Gauff dismissed Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (100) 7-5 6-2 in around 1:30.
Since the start of his fortnight in Paris, Iga Swiatek has not missed a single set. The 22-year-old Polish has even already inflicted four 6-0s on her opponents, 1 in the 1st round, 1 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd.
Avantage Swiatek
Aryna Sabalenka (2) being qualified for the quarters, Swiatek must imperatively climb at least in the last four to have a chance of remaining on the throne of world no1 at the end of Roland-Garros.
A year ago, Swiatek, winner for the first time at Porte d’Auteuil in 2020, dominated Gauff 6-1 6-3, for the first time in the Grand Slam final, at 18 years old. This is the 3rd year in a row that the 19-year-old American has made it to the quarterfinals on Parisian clay.
