iFixit’s Mac Studio Teardown Reveals Monster Cooling System

I attach it Mac Studio disassembly found, among other things, a monstrous thermal management system connected to a relatively small computer.

The teardown video detailed a somewhat complicated but not insurmountable process to get inside this small metal rectangle, and there weren’t too many surprises. The video identified a few ports, showed the motherboard being removed, and perhaps most notably revealed a dual-fan cooling system inside the device.

Also, iFixit spoke regarding the much-discussed SSD swap situation. It is possible to roll out memory provided you are using at least the same size and type of memory, but this requires the use of a device firmware update (DFU) recovery. (Read our article on the topic learn more.)

However, replacing a part with its exact copy is not the same as an upgrade, which, as might be expected, can still remain elusive.

It wasn’t impossible to get in, but it wasn’t easy either. iFixit had to pull the device’s rubber foot off to access the first few case screws, and found that the fans buried inside were difficult to clean. But on the plus side in terms of serviceability: the modular ports come and go easily, and the entire chassis is accessible with a screwdriver for the most part without risk of damage.

Overall, iFixit gave the Mac Studio a repairability rating of 6 out of 10, a number we’ve seen before for Apple products.

The video also included a quick teardown of the studio display. There’s not much to say regarding the Studio Display other than that the inside looks like a stripped down iMac. iFixit also noted that the webcam resembles a camera on the iPhone 11.

Be sure to watch the video if you want more details.
