IFC satisfied with its financing to protect the environment in Gabon –

Makthar Diop, Managing Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a subsidiary of the World Bank, on Wednesday congratulated the President of the Gabonese Transition, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguéma, for the successful conduct of actions financed by his institution in the palm oil production sector in favor of environmental protection.

« The IFC was keen to commend the Gabonese government’s ability to put in place environmental measures that contribute to the implementation of projects such as the palm oil production project, which covers 63,000 hectares and is the first project carried out by the company via the World Bank in this sector since 2011. “, indicates a press release from the Gabonese presidency published at the end of an audience between the two men in New York on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly.

Indeed, since 2010, Gabon has invested massively in the palm oil sector. To this end, Libreville had called on the industrialist Olam to develop this new sector. The company was awarded 198,000 hectares of concessions, of which 63,000 are already planted.

Gabon has adhered to RSPO and FSC certifications to ensure good environmental practices in this sector. No estimate was provided on IFC investments in this framework.

During the New York meeting, the head of the IFC recalled that his institution is also involved in Gabon in hydroelectric production and water supply in order to largely absorb the observed electricity production deficit and implement productive growth objectives for the said sector.

The IFC also intends to get involved in the railway sector in collaboration with the Société exploitation du Transgabonais (SETRAG) with which a concession has been concluded with a view to improving the mobility of goods.

Furthermore, the IFC wishes to strengthen its presence on the ground by working in a sustained manner with the Gabonese authorities and companies as well as foreign investors.
