The Game Awards have not yet taken place, but Baldur’s Gate 3 and Larian have already started their trophy harvest with several awards at the Golden Joystick Awards including Game of the Year. Several million players have been seduced by the title, and all have heard this character in its own right during their journey.
If you’ve played Baldur’s Gate 3, you know Amelia Tyler
A role-playing game set in the Dungeons and Dragons universe, Baldur’s Gate III is extremely rich in content. Taking into account the slightest choice of players or almost, the title opens and closes its doors on the fly, for dozens or even hundreds of hours. From quests to exploration through combat, discussions and all the characters, everything can vary depending on what you decide to do and the results of the dice rolls. And during these many hours exploring the Sword Coast, all players were accompanied by a voice, which materializes the thoughts of their character and some NPCs. This “consciousness” is embodied in the title by Amelia Tyler, British actress which we will find in Hades II, which we encountered in Pathfinder, and with which we live our adventure in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Recently, the latter gave a long interview to our colleagues at PC Gamer, returning in particular to her role as narrator in the Larian RPG, his performance around the character Dark Pulsions, but also his favorite moments in the title. Questioned by journalist Harvey Randall, she began by indicating that it was difficult so many lines of dialogue in Baldur’s Gate 3, but that everyone told him that the authoritarian lines, which appear as soon as the character calls on his Mind Flayer larva, were the best. Personally, she loved reading the headstonesoften engraved with jokes or insults:
There are some very sassy tombstones in Baldur’s Gate 3, which I really like. It takes a certain amount of bitterness to carve an insult in stone, knowing that this is how that person will be remembered for the rest of history… “Let the crows use this grave like a toilet”, it’s just “mwah”.
The variety of tones, the essential marker of a good Dungeons & Dragons campaign
Amelia Tyler was obviously not only sensitive to the humor of the game, since some sadder moments visibly marked her work on Baldur’s Gate 3. She thus evokes Act 2, which takes place in an area covered by shadows, and in which we cross the path of many spirits :
There are shadowy vestiges, like memories of people, in Act 2… I really enjoyed these moments, because I was able to fully immerse myself in this melancholic tone. This is what we see all the time in games where you kill a bunch of people and move on to the next level. You never say to yourself “it was Colin, the baker you just murdered”, he had a life and a family and his cat won’t be fed tonight. I like to give that little extra depth that allows these NPCs to enter a little more into reality… It’s also a fascinating acting exercise: can you summarize the life of an entire person in one single paragraph? she indicates.
More specifically, she also said loved certain approaches reminding him of Terry Pratchettthe author of Discworld Annals, a fantastic literary series full of very British offbeat humor. Many dialogues, particularly those involving animals, are indeed very marked by the influence of the author and if you are sensitive to this kind of humor, there is no doubt that you have or will love it.
In this way, Amelia Tyler recalls that the writing of Baldur’s Gate 3 addresses many themes with a wide variety of tone. She also indicates that this is what makes the game a true Dungeons & Dragons title because in the campaigns, there is not just one tone. The players fight, expressThese are very serious things, but there are also times when the players laughwhether it be situations or their characters.
