In the big cities, e-bikes from Cowboy, Bird and especially VanMoof now dominate the cycle path. Many of these bicycles also end up on the rubbish dump relatively quickly. What must be done to ensure that the e-bike does not end up as e-waste?

Few will have failed to notice that the electronic bicycle is experiencing a rapid rise. More than half of the 855,000 bicycles sold in the Netherlands in 2022 were electric. Of every six bicycles currently riding on Dutch cycle paths, there is one of which the driver hardly has to pedal.

In the big cities, and especially in the capital, this development is clearly reflected in the street scene. Since the corona pandemic, this has been dominated by e-bikes from the Brussels Cowboy, the American Bird and – especially – the Amsterdam VanMoof. These brands distinguish themselves with their sleek design, ditto finish, and built-in smarts such as a lock that you unlock with your phone.

They therefore present themselves not so much as a bicycle manufacturer, but rather as a tech company annex lifestyle brand. VanMoof’s slogan is ‘ride the future‘ and ‘drops’ every now and then limited editions…
