An airline conducted an amazing study on the effects of jet lag and how to counter them. Diet plays a key role.

Summer is an opportunity for many travelers to fly to other countries. Whether in the United States, South Korea or elsewhere, long-haul flights make it possible to satisfy these desires for exoticism. But if airports can represent a danger because they favor the proliferation of viruses, the real feared point is jet lag.

If the country is outside Europe, jet lag hits travelers hard. However, this can disrupt their sleep cycle and impact the first days of travel. To limit the effects of jet lag, an Australian airline has chosen to work with the Charles Perkins Center at the University of Sydney.

Their objective: to determine via a study the most effective solutions once morest jet lag. Their conclusions were published in June 2023 on the website of the airline in question: Qantas. And it turns out that diet is one of the easiest ways to limit jet lag.

Eat chocolate, but also chilli, fish or even soups

The meals served on airplanes can indeed influence the organism and help it to make the transition to a new time zone. And this is all the more important on long-haul flights. To determine the habits to adopt, the researchers equipped 23 volunteer passengers with a dedicated device. These 23 volunteers received specific arrangements and instructions, particularly on their diet.

The researchers then discovered thatby adapting meal times to the biological clock of travelers, recovery was easier. But this adaptation also went through menus aimed at promoting falling asleep or waking up. Among the dishes offered to travelers were fast-acting carbohydrates, fish, chicken and chilli.

These menus also included more comforting foods like soups and chocolate. But to complete the anti-jet lag routine, the travelers concerned also had to exert themselves.

Reduce jet lag by encouraging passengers to move during the flight

In addition to these adapted menus, the airline also invited the volunteers to perform some movements during the flight. The objective is the same as for food: to accustom the body to the rhythm of the destination visited. As part of these experiments, the travelers flew between Perth (Australia) and London (United Kingdom).

For now, these results serve as a first observation. They have not yet been applied to all of the company’s long-haul flights. Nevertheless, they can invite the implementation of adapted flight programs to limit jet lag.
