Studies have shown that sleeping with lights on at night increases the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. It is explained that if the light is on even if the brightness is not counted, the ability to control glucose in the blood decreases, increasing the possibility of suffering from heart disease and diabetes.
A joint research team, including Northwestern University and Harvard Medical School, conducted an experiment on 20 men and women between the ages of 18 and 40. The participants were divided into two groups and asked to sleep in dim light (less than 3 ㏓ (lux)) and medium brightness (100 to 240 ㏓). 1 ㏓ is the brightness of one candle at a distance of 1 m.
As a result, the group that slept with the 100-240 ㏓ lights on had an increase in heart rate as the sympathetic nervous system was stimulated during sleep. In addition, insulin resistance increased by 15% compared to before the experiment. On the other hand, in the dim light group, insulin resistance decreased by 4%.
The research team said, “Increased insulin resistance plays an important role in the development of diabetes. He advised, “Turn off the TV before going to bed and wear an eyepatch if it is difficult to avoid the light.”
