In recent days, a new Windows bug has been reported. Fortunately, this is not, a priori, a dangerous bug. But it can still disturb those who use a printer on Microsoft’s operating system. For some reason (even Microsoft, for the moment), a Windows update automatically installs the HP Smart app on computers and replaces the printer names.
If you also have this bug, know that you are not the only one. Following numerous articles published on the subject, Microsoft has already published a note on its website. “Some issues with printer configurations are observed on Windows devices that have access to the Microsoft Store. Microsoft is investigating this issue and coordinating with its partners on a solution”we can read.
According to the firm, some PCs running Windows 10 and Windows 11 actually install the HP Smart application. The firm also admits that users’ printers are renamed, for the most part, to HP LaserJet M101-M106, even though it is not an HP printer. The bug also causes printer icons to be replaced. Finally, when the user double-clicks on a printer, the system displays an error message: “No jobs are available for this page”.
Microsoft is already working on a solution
The firm indicates that it is already investigating the problem and will provide a solution to users later. In any case, Microsoft already clarifies that the problem is not caused by HP updates.
“In addition, printing processes are not expected to be affected by this issue. It should be possible to queue print jobs as usual, as well as other features such as copying or scanning. Printers on the device will continue to use the expected drivers for printer operations”also specifies the Redmond firm.
Note that this bug affects the following versions of the operating system: Windows 11, version 23H2; Windows 11, version 22H2; Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 22H2; Windows 10, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 1809; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB. And if a machine doesn’t use Microsoft Store it shouldn’t be affected.
