One in three adults suffers fromhigh blood pressure but only half are aware. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Heart Associationdrinking two or more cups of coffee a day can double the risk of cardiac death in people with severe hypertension (160/100 mm Hg or more).
This study was conducted among 18,600 people in Japan, all participants gave information regarding their diet, lifestyle, health status, etc. “Our study aimed to determine whether the known protective effect of coffee also applies to people with different degrees of hypertension; and also examined the effects of green tea in the same population,” explained the lead author of the study, Hiroyasu Iso. Before completing: “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to find an association between the consumption of 2 or more cups of coffee per day and mortality from cardiovascular disease in people with severe hypertension.
Double the risk
Researchers found that drinking two (or more) cups of coffee daily was associated with twice the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in people with severe hypertension compared to non-coffee drinkers.
