Even though NVIDIA RTX hardware with real-time ray tracing has been around for a few years now, there are still tons of users using NVIDIA GTX graphics cards of generations Maxwell and Pascal, graphics still perfectly valid for gaming even for modern triple A titles. Many of these users have been complaining for weeks that suddenly, the screen went black in some situations, but the good news today is that NVIDIA has released a new firmware for these graphs that solves this problem.
In general, this problem is mostly affecting users of GeForce 10, GeForce 900, GeForce 700, Titan (Maxwell, Pascal and XP) and Quadro (Maxwell and Pascal) series graphics cards, so if you have an NVIDIA GTX graphics card of these families and lately you have suffered from black screens while gaming or on desktop, keep reading because NVIDIA already has the solution.

The problems that we have mentioned occur in NVIDIA GTX graphics of the series that we have mentioned a moment ago when the screen is connected through the DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 outputs of the graphics. In fact, apart from the black screen, some users also reported that the PC completely freezes right following booting up, so NVIDIA has released a new firmware update for these graphics cards that fixes the issue.
Obviously, if the computer freezes when you try to start the PC, you will find it difficult to install this firmware update. In the next section we detail what NVIDIA says regarding it, but we would also recommend you try some alternatives, such as taking the graphics card to a friend’s PC and installing the firmware there (remember that it is a firmware that is installed on the graphics card). , not a driver that resides on your PC).
How to install this update
To install this firmware, you will need to access the NVIDIA web page and follow the instructions that are detailed there. The process is not complicated at all, but it is a bit delicate, so we recommend that you follow the instructions to the letter to avoid possible problems. It is an update wizard, so in general you will only have to follow the steps and let the tool do its job.
In addition to fixing the issues we’ve already mentioned (especially fixing the black screen on NVIDIA GTX graphics cards connected via DisplayPort), this firmware update brings a few new features. This is what NVIDIA says regarding it (own translation):
“NVIDIA Firmware Updater will detect if your graphics card needs to update its firmware, and if so, will offer the user the option to do so. If the screen goes blank or the PC freezes during startup when using a monitor connected by DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4, try one of the following solutions to be able to run the tool:
Boot using the HDMI or DVI video output.
Boot the PC using a different monitor.
Change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy or from Legacy to UEFI in BIOS.
Boot the PC using a different graphics card (such as the integrated one).
