We’re more susceptible to health conditions and complications once we get older: arthritis, heart disease, and various forms of dementia, to name a few.
Most of this is due to how our bodies change over time, but there are things we can do to mitigate the health risks.
There is also a big hazard in your bathroom that you should get rid of if you are over 65 years old.
Read on to find out what you should get rid of as a precaution, according to “bestlifeonline”.
If you are over 65, pay attention to the type of toilet in your bathroom, you may not think much regarding the different types of toilets you can have in your bathroom, but once you reach a certain age, you should.
Robin Shilts, senior home safety specialist and founder of Senior Safety Advice, says 65-years-olds are not advised to have a low toilet seat.
He explains: “Many older adults have weak leg muscles or problems with balance. This makes it difficult to control how they sit and how they get up from a low toilet seat. Weak leg muscles increase the risk of falls during the transition from standing to sitting and back, especially for for the frail elderly.
And falls aren’t the only problem. Weak muscles can make older adults unable to get up from a low toilet seat on their own, and this can lead to sitting on the toilet seat for too long, causing pressure sores or skin breakdown on older, sensitive skin.”
Older adults should therefore use a higher toilet seat because it “encourages easier and safer transportation to and from the toilet”, and using a raised toilet seat keeps the knees at the same height as the hips and this reduces the force and effort needed to get up or sit down.
This is not the only thing you can do to make your bathroom safer.
Toilet seat repair is just one step experts advise taking to make your bathroom less dangerous as you get older.
There are a number of precautions that are recommended, including installing grab bars in the bathroom and next to the toilet, as well as using non-slip mats in the bathroom.
Those with weak leg muscles or balance concerns should also consider getting a chair when showering.
The other thing you don’t want to keep in your bathroom is soap residue, as the buildup can be slippery and a safety hazard.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we experience more risk factors for falls once we reach the age of 65.
These factors include lower body weakness, vitamin D deficiency, difficulty walking and balance, use of medications, vision problems, and foot pain or weakness.
