If necessary, Finland will close the last border point with Russia, says the country’s prime minister

“We have closed all border posts on the eastern border except one, and we are ready to close the last one if necessary,” he told reporters in Helsinki. – Finland protects the external border of the European Union and the border of NATO. We will not allow this phenomenon to continue.”

Finland has seen an increase in asylum seekers arriving without visas across the country’s 1,300km border with Russia: around 800 migrants have crossed it since August.

Most of them are from the Middle East and Africa.

As a result, Finland has closed all of its border crossings over the past two weeks, except for the northernmost one in the remote Arctic region of Murmansk.

Finnish officials say Russia is trying to destabilize its northern neighbor, which Orpo last week called systematic and organized actions by Russian authorities.

In April, Moscow warned that it would retaliate tactically and strategically after it called Finland’s decision to join NATO an attack on Russian security.

From November 23, the only border control point remained open – Raja-Jooseppi (Raja-Josepio) station.

According to the Finnish Border Guard Service, migrants continued to cross the border this weekend, with a total of 60 migrants arriving on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Finland is bound by international law to ensure that migrants can apply for asylum, and places can only be restricted in exceptional circumstances, Finnish legal experts say.
