ABB achieves global milestone with IE5 SynRM water-cooled engine, setting the benchmark for energy efficiency and high power

ABB has achieved another global milestone for its IE5 SynRM (synchronous reluctance motor) range with the launch of a new version that combines the benefits of ultra-premium energy efficiency with highly effective water cooling. The new design sets a new standard for high levels of power and reliability in a compact footprint.
Customers can use IE5 SynRM water-cooled engines to save energy and reduce emissions in new designs or as direct replacements for less efficient engines. They are ideal for a wide range of industries, including marine propulsion, rubber and plastics production, and food and beverage.

New design combines the ultra-premium efficiency of SynRM motors with high-performance water cooling previously only offered by induction motors

A major advantage of the IE5 SynRM water-cooled motors is that they are much more efficient than the traditional water-cooled induction motors currently in use, which offer significant potential for upgrading with energy-saving technology. Energy efficiency is vital to optimizing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of an electric motor, as the energy cost to operate it throughout its life represents around 97% of the TCO of a motor, with the cost of acquisition represents around 2%. IE5 motors have 40% less power losses than the IE3 motors that are more commonly used. This makes the payback time for selecting an IE5 engine over an IE3 engine often less than a year.

IE5 efficiency and excellent reliability optimize total cost of ownership (TCO) through lower power consumption and reduced operating and maintenance costs

Reliability is enhanced through highly effective cooling in conjunction with the SynRM’s cold rotor and cooling fins in the bearing assembly, which reduce bearing operating temperatures. This helps to increase the life of this key component and reduce maintenance needs.
The motors are robust, with a tight seal to keep out moisture, dirt and dust, and a smooth outer surface to prevent dust build-up. This makes them perfect for demanding applications that require high power density where space is restricted, such as marine propulsion systems and thrusters in general. Additionally, the engines do not require fans or ventilation, so they do not disturb the surrounding air or release heat into the local environment. This is a huge benefit in airflow-impacted processes such as rubber and plastics production, and food and beverage applications such as chocolate conch machines. Without fans, the motors also improve the working environment by reducing noise levels.

Stefan Floeck, President of ABB’s IEC Low Voltage Motors Division, says: “ABB pioneered both SynRM technology and water cooling for induction motors. Now we have both solutions united in our water-cooled IE5 SynRM engine, which allows customers to enjoy the benefits of ultra-premium efficiency in an even wider variety of applications. It is another world first for this line, following the launch of our IE5 SynRM Increased Security engine for Classified areas.

The high power output levels of water-cooled IE5 SynRM engines offer greater design flexibility. This can allow a machine to be upgraded to provide a greater power output within the same footprint, or it can enable a more compact installation while maintaining the same power output.

They are lighter

IE5 SynRM water-cooled engines are significantly lighter than competitor designs, making them easy to handle and install. A 240 kW IE5 SynRM motor in frame size 315 weighs 870 kg, which is almost half the weight of a corresponding IE3 induction motor.
IE5 SynRM Liquid-cooled motors are available in frame sizes IEC 200-315 in aluminum frames, with steel available on request. The versatile design enables the motors to provide exceptional performance over a range of powers from 37 to 710 kW at 400 V.
