The Idéo system, prevention in youth mental health, is one of the innovative actions implemented in Aube to prevent psychological disorders among high school students. The team responsible for the project is made up of a psychiatrist, two psychologists and two child psychiatry nurses from the EPSM de l’Aube (EPSMA). These professionals are also supported by the regional health education and promotion body (IREPS), the Aube adolescent center and the Psycom association.

IDEO is a primary prevention and mental health awareness action for general and technological second year, professional second year and CAP students in the Aube department. The objectives are as follows:

  • Inform young people regarding mental health through an adapted awareness program.
  • Destigmatize psychiatry among young people: combat stereotypes and preconceived ideas (dangerousness, fatality, incurability).
  • Assess:
o the psychological state of young people with simple self-assessment tools and allow national education professionals early identification.
  • the efficiency of interventions by collecting raw data on young people’s knowledge and resources around mental health and existing structures, before and following interventions in order to improve their accessibility.
  • Direct the population (students and professionals) towards adapted structures with personalized mapping for each geographical sector. In Aube, there are 9 free support structures preserving the anonymity of young people and offering listening, information, help and/or care adapted to their needs.

The actions take place in three distinct stages
1- Before interventions:

– 3 hours of information and awareness per high school among education professionals to help identify students with psychological difficulties;
– Anonymous collection of questions from young people regarding mental health. The answers are provided during the sessions.

2– Two 2-hour interventions per half-class group (maximum 20 students) to raise awareness among young people regarding mental health:

– Evaluation of representations and knowledge in mental health
– What is mental health?
– How to maintain your mental health?
– How to spot the first signs of discomfort?
– What to do when discomfort persists?
– Information on relay structures (flyer, website)
– Quiz on preconceived ideas in terms of mental health and psychiatry
– Creation of a slogan by each group in order to raise awareness among all young people in the high school

3– Permanence in high schools throughout the duration of the interventions in order to direct young people who wish to do so towards the appropriate structure.

In the 2022/2023 school year, 9 high schools (secondary general and technological, second professional CAP) in the Aube department benefited from this system, i.e. 1,745 students. Thanks to the future recruitment of a psychologist and a nurse, the system will be deployed across all high schools in the department for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 school years, i.e. 22 establishments for 3,500 students.
