United States – A new study has revealed a link between poor oral hygiene and the risk of fatal bowel cancer.
The research team at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in the United States examined 200 cases of bowel cancer, and discovered a specific microbe in the mouth in regarding 50% of the cases.
The microbe was also found in stool samples taken from people with cancer.
The study, published in the journal Nature, showed that microbes promote the development of cancer and can lead to worse outcomes.
Speaking to Express, Dr. Farak Hamed, from the Aesthetique Dental Center, said: “New studies have shown a surprising relationship between how we take care of our teeth and the risk of colon cancer. “It appears that a certain type of bacteria that is usually found in our mouth can move to the colon if we do not brush our teeth properly, which increases the risk of colon cancer.”
He added: “This bacteria, known as Fusobacterium nucleatum, can make things worse for people who already suffer from colorectal cancer.”
Therefore, Hamed stressed the importance of maintaining healthy teeth and mouth, and said: “This shows us how important it is to brush our teeth regularly and visit the dentist. “It’s not just regarding avoiding cavities, it’s regarding whole-body health.”
