IdeaPad Slim 3; Chromebooks are perfect for students learning about computers

Review of a Chromebook, from Lenovo, my first for this type of cheap computer with a Chrome OS system developed by Google.

If the product name isn’t very sexy, IP Slim 3 Chrome 14IAN8 (IP for IdeaPad), this laptop from Lenovo is aimed primarily at a school market, powered by a low-power eight-core Intel i3 processor.

For young people who are learning about computers, the main thing is to save money on purchase and battery life. If the “engine” is mainly frugal, it is advisable not to skimp on RAM. Regardless of the device or the brand, double the latter if the extra cost suits your budget.

Example of the performance you should expect? This IdeaPad Chromebook is ideal for light media consumption. Its battery life gives you plenty of time to watch multiple movies and TV episodes. Its 1080p display is sharp and bright enough to combat glare.

Unfortunately, while the speakers are powerful, for bass sounds, prefer headphones or external speakers.

Interesting, Google is offering one year of access to Gemini Advanced AI features. It’s the new “search engine”! Will the smartest students use it for their homework?

Easy to carry (1.5 kg) (in comparison, MacBook Pro M1 2020: 1.4 kg), with a battery that lasts more than 10 hours in light use, this Lenovo has a nice spec sheet with a decent screen, fast USB ports and even an HDMI video connection.

Of note, the spacious keyboard is nearly identical to that of my much more expensive MacBook Pro. And its screen opens flat, up to 180 degrees.

We avoid…

This type of laptop is not designed for gaming, and Chrome OS compatible games are not numerous. Also designed for intensive tasks, you have to stick to the applications designed for Chrome OS from the Google Play Store.

Don’t try to install another Internet browser, it’s very complex even if the task is not impossible. In short, the home browser Chrome will be the only one available, whether we like it or not.

Lastly, the touchpad could be better, even after several hours of testing, I have not yet mastered whether to simply tap or press hard on it. Otherwise, adding a wired or wireless Bluetooth mouse will do the trick.
