Ideal combinations to pair this wine

Known as the “King of Reds,” Cabernet Sauvignon is an iconic French grape variety in the wine world, with 288 thousand hectares dedicated to its cultivation in the world according to Wine Folly and awarded as the most cultivated grape variety worldwide.

The strain is the result of a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes in the Bordeaux region of France. It is characterized by producing wines rich in aromas and flavors, with a robust structure and high concentration of tannins, which allows it great aging potential for decades, bringing greater complexity to its flavor.

Pairing

Due to the strong character that characterizes Cabernet Sauvignon, it is considered by many to be the best companion for red meat, especially when we are talking about roasted or grilled cuts. The acidity of the wine provides an ideal contrast with the seasonings of the meat, preventing one from overshadowing the other, creating the ideal combination of flavors in the mouth.

The flavor of the wine can be enhanced even further if we complement the meat with the right accompaniment, such as mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, roasted vegetables or chimichurri. Other pairing options for a Cabernet Sauvignon are dishes with intense flavors, such as some pastas, rice dishes or stews, whose flavor will not be buried under the wine.

“A wine with a strong character that pairs very well with meat, mature cheeses and dark chocolate.”

Juan José Sierra, WSET Level 3 from Corks

If you want to pair this strain with an appetizer instead of a main course, the best option is always a board of mature cheeses, especially if accompanied by cold cuts or nuts. Among the different types of cheese, cheddar, gouda and parmesan stand out as the best choice for this wine, given their higher percentage of fat and their maturity.

A different pairing experience results from accompanying dessert time with a Cabernet Sauvignon, especially when we are talking about dishes with dark chocolate or high percentages of cocoa, an ideal complement to the high concentration of tannins in the wine.

Let’s toast this September 1st, International Cabernet Sauvignon Day, with a glass… of Cabernet Sauvignon!
