Iconic Chainsaw Man scene is censored and fans react — Kudasai

Finally, the seventh episode of the anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man, which had an expected scene by the fans. In the original manga, Himeno decides to fulfill the promise she made regarding giving a kiss on the mouth to whoever killed the Demon of Eternity.and having been Denji who did such a feat, it is his turn to receive Himeno’s lips.

However, because they were celebrating a good job done at a restaurant-bar, Himeno was completely drunk and ends up throwing up in Denji’s mouth while she was kissing him. Definitely a horrible experience for our popular protagonist, but not nearly as horrible as the disappointment fans felt when they saw that the scene was censored!

It should be noted that the panel is not censored in the original manga, which increases the disappointment of viewers to see that the television broadcast was censored. Regarding the reason for censorship, there have already been many previous articles that explain the situation behind these decisions, such as the following excerpt from Crunchyroll:

  • Some anime dare with grotesque imagery, but for most series the visual impact of vomit can be too gruesome. If vomiting enters the equation as part of comedy, changing what comes out of a character’s mouth can help reduce the impact on the audience. Even if a director wants to show some uncensored bits, Japanese television has restrictions on what can be shown during certain time slots. This includes things like vomit, which is why, most of the time, they commit to a “rainbow rain.” In this way, a scene can continue to appear in a particular program and the accompanying element of humor is added.

Well, the decision to censor vomiting responds to the restrictions that exist within Japanese television, but fans cannot forget the words of the CEO of MAPPA studios, who assured that they would keep censorship at the lowest possible levels. Of course, there were also comments from viewers, highlighting:

  • «I don’t really mind this unlike other people. In fact, I think it’s a very good thing because Chainsaw Man is watched by a lot of people and no doubt a lot of them will be disgusted and leave the show. Plus, they get nothing for not censoring that vomit. Nobody benefits from seeing details of vomit. This is just my personal opinion, please don’t attack me.”.
  • «Respectable decision. MAPPA helping people get through November this year».
  • «My goodness, the CEO of MAPPA said that the anime would not be censored in July (Anime Expo). This is pretty bad, my only hope is that we get the uncensored version for streaming».
  • «I’m sure they’ll remove the censorship when the episode officially premieres. If they didn’t, I honestly wouldn’t care. Shit was disgusting in the manga».
  • «Well I really don’t like to see that animated scene».
  • «It’s a good job censorship did, the shit was totally disgusting».
  • «It’s good for nothing more than childish/crude humor and it’s pretty gross. It is useless and nothing changes if you remove the whole scene».
  • «Hopefully in the physical package version it will come uncensored».

Finally, the closing sequence of this seventh episode featured the song “Chu, Tayousei“, interpreted by Again.

The series has been broadcast since October 11 in Japan and is confirmed with a total of twelve episodes, while the platform Crunchyroll is in charge of its distribution in the West. On the other hand, Fujimoto began the publication of the manga Chainsaw Man in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump from the publisher Shueisha in December 2018, finishing the first part in December 2020. The second part of the work moved to the digital service Shonen Jump Pluswhere it has been published since July 2022.

Synopsis of Chainsaw Man

The story takes place in a world where Demons threaten the peace of humans, making them targets to be eliminated. Denji is a depressed young man who has sold several of his organs and works as a lumberjack and demon hunter to pay off his late father’s debt. Denji owns a dog (which is also a demon) named Pochita, who has chainsaws and which he uses to do his work.

This is explained because humans can make contracts with demons. After returning home from a job, Denji is called by a Yakuza to infiltrate a building and kill another demon. However, the plan was a trap to assassinate him as part of a Yakuza contract with the demon, gaining them more power. But Pochita comes to Denji’s aid and bonds with him, becoming a half-man, half-demon and acquiring Pochita’s chainsaws.
