Tit’s all in the name. Icon of the Seas (“Icon of the Seas”) just that. This modest nickname is that of a liner, the new largest cruise ship in the world. Forty restaurants, 7 swimming pools, 2,805 cabins, 7,960 passengers… An open-air Disneyland, which set sail on Saturday January 27, for the first time, from Miami, heading to the Caribbean. And which was sold out.

In total, Icon of the Seas will have cost a whopping $1.5 billion for construction that lasted almost two and a half years. This giant of the seas, longer than the Eiffel Tower, is divided into eight districts, and also includes nine Jacuzzis and a 17 meter high waterfall. With a transport capacity of 250,800 tonnes, five more than the Titanic, it left the shipyard in Turku, Finland.

For his baptism, Tuesday January 23, in Miami, he even welcomed football icon and reigning Golden Ball winner Lionel Messi.

What impact on the planet?

Impressive, and eco-friendly? In any case, that’s what the company claims to accomplish. Liquefied natural gas (LNG), via two 300-ton gas tanks, propels its 250,800 tons. It is the first giant American cruise ship of its kind. But this gas, which the industry presents as an alternative to heavy fuel oil, releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

The company therefore promises to reduce the environmental impact of this type of machine, including through a waste-to-energy conversion system as well as an on-board water recycling system.
