Have you already updated your Mac to macOS Sonoma 14.4? Be aware that, apparently, this version of the system includes a bug which makes previous versions of a file that was saved in the iCloud Drive simply disappear — if the option to optimize Mac storage (saving files in the cloud) is activated.
According to Howard Oakleydo The Eclectic Light Company, The bug appears to be exclusive to the latest version of Apple’s operating system, as it has been unable to reproduce it on macOS Ventura or even macOS Sonoma 14.3, for example.
This problem only affects files created by applications that support the macOS versioning system, which allows the user to revert a file to a previous version by clicking the “Revert To” option, located in the “File” menu in the menu bar. Among the apps covered by this feature are Pageso Numbers and the TextEdit.
Still according to Oakley, to reproduce the bug just have the aforementioned option activated, save a file with multiple versions in iCloud Drive, remove it from the machine, wait a few minutes and download it once more. Once all this is done, all versions of this file (except the last one, of course) will be permanently deleted.
Because previous versions of files are not included in backups, they cannot be recovered by saving them to another disk — which makes this bug a serious problem, according to Oakley.
The only way to avoid this headache for now is to turn off the option to optimize Mac storage using iCloud Drive, which can be found in System Settings. As noted by MacRumorsHowever, it is a good idea to carry out this process at least twice, as macOS may end up reactivating this option on its own sometimes. 🤷🏼♂️
Oakley said he has already reported this bug to Apple, which will likely correct it in the next version of the system.
