On Thursday, International Court of Justice judges unanimously ordered Israel to take all necessary and effective measures to ensure that essential food supplies enter Gaza without delay.
The court said that Palestinians in Gaza face worsening living conditions in light of the spread of famine.
The judges stated: “The Court notes that the Palestinians in Gaza no longer only face the threat of famine…but that this famine has already appeared.”
South Africa requested these new measures as part of its ongoing case accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.
In January, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to avoid any actions that might fall under the scope of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and to ensure that its forces do not commit any acts of genocide once morest Palestinians in Gaza.
In Thursday’s ruling, the court reaffirmed the January measures, but added that Israel must take measures to ensure the unimpeded provision of basic services and humanitarian aid, including food, water and electricity, as well as medical supplies and medical care to Palestinians across Gaza.
The judges added that this might be achieved by “increasing the capacity and number of land crossing points and keeping them open as long as necessary.”
The court ordered Israel to submit a report within one month from the date of the order to clarify details regarding the measures it has taken to implement the ruling.
