The Icelandic airline Icelandair has big plans for the future and plans to add new locations in America and Asia to its route network as part of the fleet renewal.
The Icelandic airline Icelandair wants to further expand its business model. Other American destinations have been included in the route network and the airline is now planning to fly to these more frequently, which is also reported fvw.de. Furthermore, new Boeing 737 MAX machines will be used in the coming years.
Optimal location to accommodate many American destinations
In Iceland, changing trains is easy and there are no long waiting times. Almost all Icelandair flights arrive in Iceland at the same time and take off once more at the same time. The airport in Keflavik uses so-called transfer waves and thus usually offers a very short transfer time. In addition, Iceland has an optimal location between Europe and America. It is not surprising that the airline intends to increasingly fly to destinations in North America in the near future. These include many destinations outside of the classic five to six hour flight time.
Current flight connections include cities such as Seattle, Vancouver, Portland and Orlando in Florida. In addition, a few other places in the USA were included in the route network, such as Boston, Chicago and New York. Some of the more unusual destinations include Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina and Detroit. Adding Raleigh-Durham was probably a good decision as Icelandair’s Chief Revenue Officer Tomas Ingason confirmed that the destination appears to be doing very well. Two new transfer waves have already been created in Keflavik for the expansion of the route network. The second takes place three hours following the first and the third just before midnight.
Through renewals in the fleet in new areas
At the end of 2021 it was announced that Icelandair would like to add more Boeing 737 Max aircraft to the fleet. The long-planned fleet renewal is set to replace the old Boeing 757 and Boeing 767. The Boeing 737 Max is to be used for the classic destinations and the Airbus 321 XLR for long-haul routes, but these are not to be delivered until 2025. But Ingason is already giving an outlook that these machines will add further destinations to the route network. Accordingly, further American targets and Asian targets might be included.
Icelandair is also continuing to expand domestic and regional flights. There are also four destinations in Greenland and the nearby Faroe Islands.
Conclusion on Icelandair’s planned route expansion
The Icelandic airline Icelandair is planning several renewals. The high-consumption old aircraft are being replaced by new ones in order to be able to further expand the route network in the future. Further destinations in America and Asia might then be included in the future. This might mean a bigger market and more awareness for Icelandair. How this will play out in reality remains to be seen.
