Ice sculptures in the Curonian Spit: creations of wind and water of incredible beauty

On Wednesday, the people who came for a walk on the shore of the Curonian Lagoon could not believe their eyes what nature had created in a few hours.

Lamps, benches, embankment, trees, bushes – covered with a layer of ice. Thick ice icicles, reminiscent of a melting wax candle, formed the entire composition.

Local residents said that they wait for such a miracle every year. On Tuesday evening, when the cold began to press, he went to look at the embankment, but he still did not find anything.

“The wind must be blowing from the east, there must be a lot of water and it must be cold,” said Aušra Feser, a non-resident.

Due to the strong wind, water splashes from the Curonian Lagoon splash on nearby benches, bushes, road signs, etc. and freezes quickly (because of the low sensible air temperature). There is no ice in the Curonian Lagoon yet, but the ice is slowly receding from the coast. In the coming days, the water bodies will freeze if the frost continues. Just like the flooded meadows of the Nemunas delta in the Šilutė district will freeze.
