Ice hockey: victory for Salzburg, debacle for KAC

EC Red Bull Salzburg, who have been confirmed as quarter-finalists of the ICE Hockey League, celebrated an unchallenged 7-1 victory over bottom-placed Linz on Friday, matchday 48. KAC, on the other hand, lost 7-0 to third-placed Fehervar in their fourth-to-last game of the regular season in sixth place. However, the team of the hour are the Pustertal Wolves with seven wins in a row.

The South Tyroleans prevailed 4:3 in Znojmo after a penalty shoot-out, Gregory Carey scored the decisive goal. It was the third away win for the “Wolves” within 72 hours. On the two days before they had won at VSV (6:2) and in Ljubljana (4:2).

Fixed place in danger

KAC slid into their third defeat in a row against Hungary, which turned into a debacle with 0-4 goals in the final period. This means that the champion runs the risk of losing sixth place, which means a fixed place in the quarter-final play-off. Fehervar consolidated third place after the last four defeats. Leader Salzburg also won the fourth duel of the season with the Black Wings, who are already six matches without a win.

The Dornbirn Bulldogs had declared themselves “unable to play” for the matches in Vienna (Friday) and Linz (Saturday). Both games were penalized 5-0 for the Capitals and Black Wings by the league’s COVID task force on Friday. HCB Südtirol’s Friday game against VSV was postponed by the league due to “medical precautions”.
