Olli Palola pushed the goalkeeper with the tip of his club and then Mantas Armalis reacted by knocking an unprepared Palola during yesterday’s SHL match which Leksand won 3-2 following the draw.
– I get a spearing in the ribs and the referee didn’t react to it. I had a hill between me and Olli, if I hadn’t had it, it might just as well have been a push. I just wanted to mark, but it takes a lot of bad luck, says Armalis.
Forced to fine
The disciplinary committee writes in its decision: “Even if Mantas Armali’s offense was preceded by this, his subsequent choice to deliberately hit the head of the opposing player with his glove is indefensible. The action is punishable and should lead to suspension.
After an overall assessment of the circumstances, the length of the suspension is determined to a time which is deemed to correspond to four matches. He must also pay a fine in the amount stated in the decision.”
“It’s exaggerated”
The fine is set at SEK 26,875.
– The punishment is reasonable. It’s an ugly action on my part, says Armalis.
Palola was taken to hospital and remained overnight with a confirmed concussion.
“It’s a concussion, but nothing worse than that. I have already spoken to Armalis and the matter is settled so it is unnecessary to comment more than that,” Palola wrote in a text message to SVT Sport during the morning.
Armalis believes that he feels a sense of relief following having contact with Palola.
– I received an answer that he is doing well under the circumstances. Then a great weight was lifted. I have a lot of respect for him responding that way, says the goalkeeper.
