ICC Teams of the Year: India and Australia rule, not a single Pakistani included

International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the men’s and women’s Test, ODI and T20 teams of the year for 2023, which do not include a single Pakistani male or female cricketer.

The five teams across the three formats were announced by the ICC on Tuesday and 11 players were selected for each format on the basis of international performance during the calendar year.

Players in all these teams were selected by an expert panel of media representatives included in the ICC Voting Academy. The panel selects the team based on the performance of all these players during the calendar year and also names a captain and a wicket-keeper in all the playing XIs.

Pat Cummins was named in the ICC Men’s Test Team of the Year for leading his team to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) title in 2023, taking 42 wickets at an average of 27.50 with three five-wicket hauls. Air Captain has been appointed.

Five Australian players have got a place in this team, including bowler Mitchell Starc. Usman Khawaja, the only player to complete 1,000 Test runs in 2023, has been included in the Test team for the second consecutive year with 1,210 runs at an average of 52.60 and three centuries. World Test Championship final player of the match Travis Head and wicketkeeper Alex Carey are also included in the squad.

India is the top ranked ODI team having won all their matches in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup before losing to Australia in the World Cup final. India’s consistency and impressive performance throughout the year saw six players selected in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year, including both openers and a fast bowler.

In 2023, leading run-scorers Shibman Gill (1,584 runs), Virat Kohli (1,377) and Rohit Sharma (1,255), who are currently second to fourth in the ODI batting rankings, have been named in the squad.

Travis Head, who scored 137 runs off 120 balls in the final of the World Cup in Ahmedabad, is ranked third, while New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell is ranked fifth. South African wicketkeeper Henrik Klaasen has been selected for 2023 after scoring 927 runs and taking 20 dismissals.

Australia’s Adam Zampa and India’s Kuldeep Yadav have been included in the spinners, while India’s Mohammad Shami (43 wickets) and Mohammad Siraj (44 wickets) and South Africa’s all-rounder Marco Jansson have been included in the fast bowlers.

ICC Men’s T20 Team of the Year

Four players have been included from the top-ranked Indian team, with Surya Kumar Yadav named as the captain. Yadav has scored 733 runs in 18 matches at a strike rate of 155.95 in 2023 and has secured the top position in the ranking of this format.

New Zealand’s Mark Chapman (576 runs), Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza (515) and new Indian batsman Yashasvi Jaisal (430) were the main picks in the list of highest run scorers last year, while England’s Phil Salt and West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran’s performance was also enough for his selection.

Surprisingly, no player from Pakistan failed to make it to the format as well, while Alpesh Ramjani of Uganda became the first player from his country to be included in the ICC Team of the Year. Ramjani has been shortlisted for the Men’s T20 Cricketer of the Year award as well as the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year.
