ICC members: Court has jurisdiction over Israeli officials

THE HAGUE – Member states of the International Criminal Court have confirmed that the court has jurisdiction over Israeli officials who commit crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories.

This came in a joint statement by Spain, Ireland, Colombia, Brazil, Palestine, South Africa, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Comoros and Djibouti, sent to the Specialized Preliminary Examination Department to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Galant.

The statement stressed that the court has jurisdiction over Israeli officials who commit crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories, in accordance with the Rome Statute.

On May 20, ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan announced that the court was seeking to issue arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Galant on charges of committing “war crimes.”

Khan added, in a statement at the time, that he “has reasonable grounds to believe that Netanyahu and Galant bear criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity” committed on Palestinian territory in the Gaza Strip, starting at least from October 8.

With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, leaving more than 131,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.
