With the war in Ukraine, the partnership between the German and Russian space agencies for an animal observation project was discontinued. Since then there has been no more data transfer. That should change once more – with mini satellites.
With the help of mini-satellites, a project for worldwide animal observation from space is to provide data once more. This was announced by the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Biology in Konstanz on Tuesday. When the current test phase is completed, the “Icarus” (International Cooperation for Animal Research Using Space) project is scheduled to resume operations in October 2024.
According to the Max Planck Institute, between 2020 and March 2022, an antenna on the Russian module of the ISS space station recorded data such as animal movements and sent it to the researchers. The partnership between the German and Russian space agencies ended with the war in Ukraine. Since then, no more data has been transmitted from the ISS to the researchers.
In the project, transmitters attached to wild animals transmit data, for example regarding the movements of the animals, to the receiver in space. Researchers worldwide will receive the information from there. The sensors of the new satellites are intended to record movement and environmental data from birds, bats, sea turtles and land mammals anywhere on earth. According to the Max Planck Institute, this is also new. The ISS did not cover the arctic and polar regions beyond southern Sweden to the north and the southern tip of Chile to the south, the statement said. In addition, the new receivers on the satellites are more powerful.
