The vice president of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Institute of Mining (IBRAM) and CEO of Lundin Mining, Ediney Maia Drummond stated during the opening of e-Mining 2023 that with geopolitical tensions, countries accelerate actions for self-sufficiency, including mineral commodities . “This is an opportunity for us to expand mining on a sustainable basis in the country. According to him, mining companies seek to evolve and know that they need to have a supply chain aligned with their corporate and institutional interests and objectives. The event, which featured several lectures during the last Tuesday (4), was 100% online and free.

The vice-president of the Board of Directors of IBRAM also recalled that the Institute works to strengthen the relationship between the associated mining companies and different publics. “We encourage innovation, disseminate knowledge, good practices and articulate development opportunities for the entire sector. This event is an example of that effort. It is one of the channels through which mining companies seek to approach the network of suppliers, in order to strengthen the mining universe”, he said.

The CEO of IBRAM, Raul Jungmann, stated that there is no more space in the economy for those who do not see sustainability as a priority. “It is absolutely necessary to focus on sustainability to make a profit, going backwards from the past. Concern for the environment is a fundamental part of the development of any industrial sector,” he said.

According to him, IBRAM has responded diligently to this question. “An example of this is the Mineração do Brasil ESG Agenda, structured by the Institute and its associates to promote transformations in mining processes and, thus, become even safer and more responsible”, said Jungmann.

He also spoke regarding the strength of the sector in the Brazilian economy. “In 2021, according to IBRAM, mining in Brazil raised BRL 117 billion in taxes and BRL 10 billion in royalties, in addition to employing, directly or indirectly, two million people”.

Sander Elias Rodrigues, head of Business at Armac, sponsor of e-Mining 2023, highlighted the importance of debating topics such as safety, efficiency, innovation and sustainability to open up possibilities for new business. “Uniting different actors in an event with enriching debates certainly reflects positively on economic development and on improving the competitiveness and productivity of the entire segment. We are proud to be part of mining. An activity that transforms and provides local development, employment, income and professional qualification to all”.

Marcelo Martins, CEO of Make Gestão e Training, also sponsor of the event, recalled how management is necessary for the evolution of any industrial sector and, in particular, mining. “The useful life of a mine, of a dam, fundamentally depends on good management. This sector, so important for the country’s economy, with a significant share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), needs investments in qualified management”, he said, referring to the importance of participating in events such as e-Mining.

Also present at the opening ceremony of e-Mining 2023, federal deputy Zé Silva (Solidariedade/MG) spoke regarding the need for the sector to be more present in the National Congress. “We created the Sustainable Mining Parliamentary Front (FPMin) to debate the main agendas of this sector and bring more transparency to this segment. We meet twice a month to build a priority mining agenda, with fundamental themes for the evolution of this important economic activity”.
