From Spanish Academies to swedish Success

Diabate’s journey began in the youth academies of Ivory coast’s renowned clubs, ASEC Mimosas and Ivoire Académie, before embarking on a Spanish adventure in 2018. He joined RCD Mallorca, gaining valuable experience with both the senior team and their reserve side, Mallorca B.

Further loan spells with Sevilla Atlético and Atlético Madrid B pitted him against some of spain’s finest young talent, honing his skills in a demanding and competitive environment.

His move to Sweden in July 2023 with Västerås SK marked a new chapter. Diabate quickly made his mark, scoring three goals in 16 appearances. He continued to impress during the 2024 Allsvenskan campaign, netting once in 20 games, a performance that caught the eye of GAIS.

Ibrahim Diabate: Thank you! It’s been an incredible journey. Starting at ASEC Mimosas and Ivoire Académie in Ivory Coast gave me a strong foundation.Moving to Spain with RCD Mallorca and playing for their reserve team,and also loan spells with Sevilla Atlético and Atlético Madrid B,taught me the importance of discipline and adaptability. Sweden has been a great experience too, and I’m excited to bring all these lessons to GAIS.

Archyde: Ibrahim, welcome to GAIS and thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Let’s start at the beginning. Your journey began in Ivory Coast,where you trained at renowned academies like ASEC Mimosas and Ivoire Académie. How did those early experiences shape you as a player?

Ibrahim diabate: Thank you, it’s a pleasure to be here. Those academies were crucial for my growth. ASEC Mimosas, in particular, is known for producing top talent, and the training there was intense and disciplined. It taught me the importance of hard work,technique,and mental strength. Ivoire Académie also played a big role in helping me understand the tactical side of the game. Those foundations have stayed with me throughout my career.

archyde: You then moved to Spain in 2018, joining RCD Mallorca. What was that transition like, and how did it help you grow as a player?

Diabate: Moving to Spain was a big step for me. The football culture there is very different—it’s more technical and tactical. At Mallorca, I learned to adapt to a faster pace and a more demanding environment. Playing for both the senior team and Mallorca B gave me a lot of experience, and the loan spells at Sevilla Atlético and Atlético Madrid B were also valuable. competing against some of Spain’s best young players pushed me to improve every day.

Archyde: Your move to Sweden in 2023 with Västerås SK marked a new chapter. How did you adapt to Swedish football, and what did you learn during your time there?

Diabate: Swedish football is very physical and direct, which suited my style of play. It was a new challenge,but I enjoyed it. at Västerås, I had the chance to play regularly and prove myself. The fans were amazing, and the club gave me the platform to showcase my abilities. I learned a lot about consistency and adapting to different styles of play, which has made me a more complete player.

Archyde: GAIS’ sporting director, Magnus Sköldmark, described you as a “physical, powerful, and hard-working player.” How would you describe your playing style, and what do you bring to GAIS?

Diabate: I think that description is accurate. I’m a forward who likes to use my physicality to hold up the ball and create opportunities for my teammates. I’m also very competitive and always give 100% on the pitch. I believe in working hard for the team, whether it’s pressing defenders, making runs, or tracking back. At GAIS, I wont to bring energy, goals, and a winning mentality to help the team achieve its goals.

Archyde: You’ve faced GAIS before while playing for Västerås. What stood out to you about the team,and how does it feel to now be a part of it?

Diabate: GAIS was one of the toughest teams I played against in Sweden. They’re very organized, competitive, and have a strong team spirit. I remember thinking how challenging it was to break them down. Now that I’m here, I’m excited to be part of that same competitive environment. It’s a great club with a rich history, and I’m looking forward to contributing to its success.

Archyde: What are your personal goals for the remainder of the 2024 season with GAIS?

diabate: My main goal is to help the team finish the season strongly. I want to score goals, create chances, and make a positive impact on the pitch. Personally, I also want to continue improving and adapting to the team’s style of play. I’m here to work hard and give my best for GAIS.
