Ibi builds optical ring that connects MG, SP and RJ with a capacity of 200 gigabits per second

A Place implemented its own network optical fiber as part of an innovation process that includes investments exceeding R$ 10 million. This movement led the company to develop an optical ring, which is 2,000 km long and will connect three states: Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Pedro Figueiredo Matias is the company’s technical and operational director and spoke regarding the news:

We didn’t have our own optical ring. Until the end of 2022 we used contracts that we called transport. In other words, we hired speed capacity on third-party circuits. What is not the link itself, the link is when it connects you to the world

The completion of the infrastructure works is scheduled for the end of 2023 and, according to the executive, one of Ibi’s goals is to update itself and be ahead of its rivals with the use of new technologies. He also defends the company’s higher-cost investments due to its focus on long-term operations.

Matias also talks regarding the initial capacity of the optical ring, which can deliver 200 gigabits per second. However, the idea is that the equipment will be able to double its capacity to 400 gigabytes in the future. This is part of the gradual expansion process. The director states that Ibi’s fiber optic network has a total length of 3 thousand km of cables in the cities served by the provider.

Pedro Matias also spoke more regarding the use of cutting-edge technologies, which will make the equipment up to date even when used a few years later:

Equipment that was installed, for example, in 2017, remains current, as it supports new technologies and meets today’s market needs. This internal network technology allows data to flow from our region, Leste de Minas, to the rest of the world
