Ian McKellen recalled his accident on stage, during which a cloth stuffing saved his ribs

Sir Ian McKellen is already 85 years old, but he doesn’t stop acting, in fact! He also recently ruled out possibly returning as Gandalf in future Lord of the Rings films, particularly The Hunt for Gollum. Of course, the actor suffered a minor accident during a performance in London, he fell off the stage, and as he explained in an interview, it was only due to a piece of clothing that nothing more serious happened.

The accident happened in June at the Noël Coward Theater in London, where he played in the play Player Kings. He suffered minor injuries to one of his cervical vertebrae and his wrist, but as he said in a recent interview, it could have been more serious, i.e. his ribs could have been broken. So he is a little afraid to leave his home. And although his injuries are not serious, McKellen was in excruciating pain, and still is, after the accident.

“I avoid leaving home as much as possible, for fear of bumping into someone in the street, for I still have an excruciating pain in my shoulders from the shock to my body. But the stuffing I wore for the part of Falstaff saved my ribs and other my joints, so I consider myself lucky. I’ve been going over this fall in my head countless times. I thought it must be the end in some ways.

Of course, I wasn’t thinking so much about death, I rather felt that this would be the end of this play for me. I have to tell myself that I’m not too old to act. And that it was just a damn accident. I didn’t lose consciousness, I wasn’t dizzy, but it’s also true that I couldn’t return to the stage, they continued the performance without me,” McKellen explained to Saga magazine. The interview was published in The Standard extracted.

Of course, the star couldn’t help himself, he had to watch the Player Kings last show in Newcastle at the Theater Royal at the end of July.
