WSJ “Visit team visit negotiations are practically concluded… Visit on the 29th at the earliest”
A visit by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the Russian-occupied Zaporiza nuclear power plant in Ukraine is expected to be realized early next week.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 26th (local time), citing a source, that negotiations on the issue of the IAEA inspection team’s visit to the Japorija nuclear power plant had been effectively concluded.
The visit was scheduled for next week, and it is known that there is a possibility that the visit will be made as early as the 29th.
Earlier, IAEA Secretary-General Rafael Grossi traveled between Austria and Turkey to negotiate with the governments of Ukraine and Russia, respectively, and in France discussed the situation at the Zaporiza nuclear power plant with President Emmanuel Macron.
It is known that the IAEA inspection team will bring parts necessary for repairs to the Japorija nuclear power plant.
The Zaporiza nuclear power plant with six reactors, Europe’s largest, supplied about 20% of Ukraine’s electricity before the Russian invasion.
Since this month, fighting has continued this month in and around the Zaporiza nuclear power plant, which was occupied by the Russian military in March of this year.
In particular, recently, the last one of the four transmission lines connecting the power plant and the outside was damaged due to a fire in a nearby hill, and it was disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid.
President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced Russia, saying that the damage to the power lines would shut down the reactor’s cooling system and cause a radiation leak.
Ukraine and Russia both blamed their opponents for the bombardment and demanded inspections from the IAEA.
