Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi January 26 warned Iran had enough materials to make “some” nuclear weapons and he plans to travel to Tehran in February to negotiate the resumption of the agency’s nuclear monitoring activities.

Speaking to the European Parliament (EP), Mr. Grossi said that the Comprehensive Joint Action Plan (JCPOA) is currently facing a huge deadlock, including Iran disconnecting the 27 surveillance cameras of the IAEA, meaning the agency is unable to effectively monitor Tehran’s nuclear program.

The UN official also expressed hope to make some progress in persuading Iran to resume cooperation during the visit scheduled for February.

Mr. Grossi said that, in addition to the fact that Tehran might not explain to IAEA Regarding radioactive traces found in sites the country has never declared as nuclear sites, Iran’s growing stock of enriched uranium is also a matter of concern.

“By this point they have accumulated enough nuclear material to make several nuclear weapons, not just one,” he said.

However, the diplomat also noted that the fact that Iran has a large stock of enriched uranium “doesn’t mean it possesses a nuclear weapon… Building a nuclear bomb would require a design process. and test”.
